European Fields

Hans van der Meer set out to capture those gatherings, hauling his stepladder and his artist’s eye to soccer fields all over Europe—to the Mediterranean and North Seas, to wine country and concrete cityscapes, to the foot of the Alps and the wet grounds of England. He compiled the images into European Fields: The Landscape of Lower League Football, a book that is as much about the setting for amateur soccer games as it is about the men who play it.
